Face, your opponent I say
Though everything trembling
Rise to the field of battle, walk to the ring
Stand face to face
This battle will take place
Hidden from sight this fight happens every day
This war will forever rage,
Hide, you can not
For your opponent knows your face
This cannot be won by fist or feet
This fight asks for your heart to beat
Avoid it and you will only know defeat
Engage I say, stand toe to toe and fight
And you will discover your light.
Apollo Creed vs. Rocky Balboa, Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield, and Goku vs. Vegeta.
There are more examples, we all have seen it, two great advisories engage in a fight, they speak ill of each other or even fight dirty, they battle and bleed but not one gives in, they are pushing each other to the next level, and after the fight, after the bell has rung they become friends, sometimes even best friends. We like these stories it shows how we can forgive and how to opposites can be immensely strong together, we like it when the bad guys do something good to battle an even greater enemy and join the hero, Loki, and Thor. The stories go on and on, often you see this in the ring as well people who hated each other’s guts, often after the fight become close or at least walk out respecting each other.
Fighting transforms, we can see how our wars have changed landscapes even after so many years, we can see that physically a fighter body or face changes, battle scars, sadly we see people who went off to war come back forever scared not just physically, but mentally and emotionally changed a fight changes people, it transforms us.
A quote from Rocky IV: “I came here tonight, and I didn’t know what to expect, I’ve seen a lot of people hating me, and I didn’t know what to feel about that, so I guess I didn’t like you much not either. During this fight, I seen a lot of changing, the way yous felt about me, and the way I felt about you, In here, there were two guys killing each other, But I guess that’s better than 20 million. What I am trying to say is that if I can change and you can change everybody can change!”
This transformation does not have to be bad it can be a change that unites us, a change where we lose sight of what hurt us but see and understand more of each other, what I realize when we face our opponent it is often not them who we are facing, we are facing, fear, judgment, beliefs we fight anger and control but mostly the opponent we face is ourselves.
It is that transformation I see in myself I have not fought anything or anyone worth not, but as we all do I face fear and doubt, I have experienced loss and the troubles that come in all families and what I noticed is that I am walking out changed but if I face the true opponent I will come out this fight more me, I hope this makes sense.
As usual, someone said it better and with me often I find Rocky says it best.
When you fight and you are open to see who is your, real foe, you grow, and every day asks of us to fight, I always wonder what was this point in the bible of fight the good fight of faith 1 timothy 6:12. I am not a theologian and I am taking it out of context please forgive me, what is a good fight why fight?
Every day we are faced with all kinds of battle and most of these battles are things within, and I believe often we shove it aside and avoid it, ignore our feelings leaving our soul hungry we just make it pass the day, we try and deny the flame inside of us, and if we do, we lose, but the fight will forever rage on because we all have a warriors heart, and it burns, burns with the same desire and questions every day we need to face ourselves and realize who we are discover our light.
I will end with a part of an epic song by Survivor: Burning heart.
“In the warrior’s code
There’s no surrender
Though his body says stop
His spirit cries, never
Deep in our soul
A quiet ember
Knows it’s you against you
It’s the paradox
That drives us on”
